Make your Book Unique!

By Stefanie Newell

Stefanie Newell, Writing Coach

Do you know what usually happens in a romance book?

If you guessed that two people fall in love, then you’re absolutely correct.

Romance may not be your favorite genre, but I can assure you there’s a common theme within your genre as well. That’s why it’s necessary to stand out from the crowd and make your book unique.

With millions of books on the market, you may be thinking, “What can I do to make my book stand out?”

I have one simple tip that will help you! Well two actually…

The first tip is to research your competition prior to writing your book.

Read their books! Read their reviews! See which aspects their readers love and which areas they could improve. I can tell you from 10 years of coaching, that not enough people do this step!

By incorporating this step into your process, you are starting your writing career on solid ground.

For non-fiction writers, if most of your competition is in defense of a topic, don’t be afraid to take a different stance! Be authentic by sharing personal stories, anecdotes, and testimonials.

And if you really want to stand out, share new ways to do old things.

For fiction writers, take a chance and do the unexpected! Stories don’t always have to be tied up with a neat little bow! This technique takes some mastering. But if done correctly, it works.

My second tip is quite simple…

We are all unique and have our own “writer’s voice.” Stay true to your voice!

Stephanie Newell is an incredible resource for an aspiring writer. From a publisher’s perspective, any writer who has published less than three successful volumes (less than 25,000 units sold each) and doesn’t work with a proven writing coach is not worth investing time and resources into.

Let me put it this way, even a pro NFL quarterback at the height of his career will benefit from the expertise and guidance of a coach.
